The more I get out to see the legends, the more grateful I am for the roots they have laid. Dub Judah was at the Southbay Dub Club in LA this past Saturday in celebration of the anniversary of the coronation of Selassie I, and it was a capper to a special night in Los Angeles. From the moment I arrived at the venue high off the Dodger's World Series win, I knew I was in for something good. The first several faces I saw standing outside reasoning were heavy hitters on the California dub scene. They had come from Humboldt, the Bay, and LA's surrounding cities to see this unique and incredible show.
With the Haile Charged Sound System crew getting the crowd ready, playing deep basslines and dubs for the crowd, the vibe was high. When I arrived, the system was well warmed up and filling the space with heavy bass and clear vocals. Several in attendance were dancing hard and the moment I walked in, I couldn't help but start to dance myself.
When Dub Judah took over the sound, you could feel the anticipation in the air and once he began to play, he didn't disappoint. I've never seen anyone bounce from live dubbing on the board, to playing bass, to singing vocals, and it was something to behold. To see it being done by someone who's been at it for well over 30 years was truly a gift. His selections, his spirit, and his love of music shone through on every song.
The highlight of the night for me was most certainly Make a Joyful Noise (Boom Shaka Laka). The crowd immediately increased their pace and voiced their excitement. As the song began playing, he picked up his bass and played the low end of the song with mastery. After a quick pull up, he went through the song in full and the crowd was hyped. The rest of the show was equally good and went deep into the night.
Prior to this show, I had never been to a Southbay Dub Club show but I will definitely be back. This crew is bringing the true soundsystem culture to LA and I hope more people in the city catch on to what's happening. If you're a reggae head and you've yet to dive into the world of dub and sound system, you won't be disappointed. There's a reason it's so popular in Jamaica and overseas. If you even have a smidge of interest, a good place to start would be at a Southbay Dub Club/ Haile Charged Sound System show. Go check them next go round.
